This session will showcase youth-led actions – initiatives, projects, advocacy actions – that tackle urban problems and help to achieve people-centred sustainable urban development, from all around Indonesia and Asia-Pacific. Young people represent a dynamic population group in the rapidly urbanizing countries in the global South. Not only that, they are capable to be positive change makers in their cities and communities, if empowered to do so. In fact there are many examples where tomorrow’s leaders are already taking action today. This energetic session will bring together youth leaders who are taking actions across a diverse range of urban challenges, from lack of sustainable transport to the need for greater citizen participation, or from raising awareness about Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) to facilitating civic dialogues on urban planning. It will also introduce innovative, youth-inclusive approaches to urban problems.
The session will take the style of rapid speeches by youth speakers who will each share with audience and expert discussants their action or initiative’s target problem, model (or key message), challenge and impact. In the last minutes, the youth presenters will have time to engage with a panel of expert discussants representing organizations from multi-sector backgrounds – development partners, private sector, public and civic sector, local government, etc. – that are working for the support and empowerment of youth as urban problem solvers. The discussants will be welcome to ask questions, comment and provide feedback freely.
